Resize pictures to fit or fill the screen

Endless Slideshow Screensaver offers several ways to automatically resize pictures that do not fit your screen during the slideshow. Plus, it allows the use of different resize options for different types of pictures: big portrait pictures, big landscape pictures, and small pictures. You can choose these options in the screensaver settings, [ Viewer ] tab, [ Picture resize ] section:

Portrait pictures are tall pictures where the height is greater than the width.

Landscape pictures are wide pictures where the width is greater than the height.

A resize option selected for the big landscape pictures is also applied to the square pictures where the width has exactly the same number of pixels as the height.

[ Scale preserving the aspect ratio ] option will shrink or enlarge the picture preserving the original aspect ratio until the picture is fully visible. If the aspect ratio of the picture differs from the aspect ratio of your monitor (or the aspect ratio of the area available for that picture, in case you choose to show several pictures on every monitor), then pieces of the background will be also be visible, like this:

[ Stretch to fill all available space ] option will resize the pictures so that they cover all available space pixel to pixel without preserving the aspect ratio of the original picture. The background is never visible with this resize option:

[ Smart crop ] option resizes the picture preserving the aspect ratio so that the smallest side (height for landscape pictures and width for portrait pictures) fits the available space. Then the other side of the picture is cropped at both ends so the picture center remains visible. This way every picture covers the entire screen and the background is not visible:

As you can see it's not the best idea to use the [ Smart crop ] option for the portrait pictures on wide screens. It's better to use the [ Scale preserving the aspect ratio ] option for such pictures. At the same time, using the [ Smart crop ] option for the landscape pictures is way better on wide screens. And that's exactly why Endless Slideshow Screensaver offers different resize options for different picture types.
